PAKARENA DANCE

Pakarena Dance is from Makassar, South Sulawesi. Pakarena derives from the word karena, which means a play, while prefix pa means the players. People of Gowa usually perform this dance. In ancient times, Pakarena was performed in a palace, but it has become a folk dance.
The dancers of Pakarena are usually women and they dance softly and gently. It reflects Gowa women real character, which is polite, loyal, and full of respect to others.
The dance is divided into twelve phases. The moves in every phase have similar patterns. This fact makes it rather difficult for the audience to understand every phase. Actually, the pattern in every phase has its own meaning. Moves in the sitting position show the beginning and the end of this dance. Clockwise moves reflect the human life cycle. Up and down movements reflect how we live our life. Our lives can be up and can be down.
Pakarena dancers cannot open their eyes too wide and cannot lift their feet too high. These rules must be obeyed during the two hour long dance. So, the dancers must be healthy physically and mentally. Besides, they must pass the ritual ceremony, called Jajatang, in order to make the performance succeed.
